Heart of the Matter

People place their faith in countless things: the sturdy chair that supports them, the bus that arrives reliably each morning, or the meal lovingly prepared by their parents. Faith is an integral part of our daily lives, and many of us have our own unique interpretations of it. But, do we fully understand what Biblical faith is? The Bible beautifully defines faith in Hebrews 11:1-2: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it, the men of old gained approval.”

In this series titled “Heart of Faith,” we will dive into the lives of individuals throughout the Old Testament who were deemed righteous by God because of their unwavering faith (trust) in the One called Jesus. We will learn that like that mustard seed (which represents faith) that started small, when we pursue God with all our hearts He will grow our faith to unmeasurable levels. Just as these men exemplified steadfast faith, we pray that you, too will possess the same “Heart of Faith.”

In the coming months, we will discuss what faith is. However, to understand biblical faith, we must first recognize the condition of our hearts and how it relates to our faith in Jesus. The heart is an incredible organ that pumps life throughout our body. Unsurprisingly, both the world and the Bible describe the heart as symbolically representing the central core of who we are at our deepest level. However, when we compare what the world and the Bible say about the condition of our hearts, we find a significant contrast. The world encourages us to "follow your heart," suggesting that the condition of our hearts is pure on its own, while the Bible teaches that our hearts are deeply corrupted by sin. The heart of the matter is that we need a heart transplant, and this is only possible through faith in Jesus.
