Faith in the Wandering
God promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that their descendants would receive a land of their own. It's interesting to note that God allowed all of them to live as foreigners in this promised land without ever acquiring it as their own possession during their lifetimes. One might expect them to struggle with this and lose faith, but according to Hebrews 11:12-16, the opposite is true. Rather than anchoring their hopes in what they could see, these men looked ahead to what they could not see and placed their faith in the One they would spend eternity with in Heaven. “They desired a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them” (Hebrews 11:16). Just as the Old Testament patriarchs lived in a foreign land, eagerly awaiting their eternal home with their Creator, followers of Jesus find themselves in a similar state of wandering and wondering today. Do you eagerly await your heavenly home, where you will be in the presence of the object of your faith—Jesus? Understanding this truth profoundly impacts our faith as we sojourn through this broken world as God's ambassadors.
