Adults Tame Their Tongue

Jan 23, 2026    Brett McGrath

The tongue is described using vivid metaphors: a fire, a poisonous animal, a fountain, and a fig tree. Fire, animals, and water can either destroy or be useful, depending on how they are controlled or directed. In the same way, the tongue wields great power for harm or for good. Scripture teaches that the tongue can only be truly tamed by God; left unchecked, it will be used by either Satan or Jesus. Just as a fountain or a tree cannot produce two different types of substances, our words reveal the true source of our hearts. A fountain cannot pour both fresh and bitter water; a fig tree cannot bear olives or grapes. Our speech reflects the spiritual source within us. Therefore, it is vital to remain closely knit to God, allowing Him to shape our hearts. Only then can our words and character truly reflect Christ, pouring out His truth and love to others.
