SCRIPTURES
Isaiah 11:1-5 & 10 | Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot— yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. He will delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked. He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment. In that day the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.


2 Samuel 7:12-13 | For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he sins, I will correct and discipline him with the rod, like any father would do. But my favor will not be taken from him as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from your sight. Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’”


DISUCUSSION

1. David’s family will produce an heir who will be a banner of salvation to the whole world. Who is this referring to?
2. How does Isaiah 11 describe Jesus? Think about what you know from the New Testament. In what ways does Jesus fill these descriptions?
3. What promise does God make to David’s family in 2 Samuel? David’s family is defeated and no longer in power. How is this promise still true?
4. Today’s reading tell us that David has found favor with God. Psalm 5:12 says, “For You bless the righteous person, Lord, You surround him with favor as with a shield.”

• According to this verse, who does God give favor to?
• Who is righteous? (See Romans 3:10)
• How are we declared righteous (or made right with God)? (2 Corinthians 5:21)
• Based on these verses, do you have God’s favor? Why or why not?
